Action Required / Join Us: Community Clean-Up & Council Initiative at Commonside East – Sat 17 Oct

Merton Council is launching a major environmental improvement and deep-cleansing initiative for the stretch of Commonside East between Windmill Road and Abbots Road, this coming Saturday, 17th October 2026, and the Friends of Mitcham Common are proud to support it!

Commonside East has long been an environmental hotspot with litter accumulating on both the highway and adjacent common land. The Council is stepping up with a temporary advisory parking suspension to enable a thorough mechanical sweep and enhanced cleansing operation.

On the day:-

9.00 am

Street cleansing, highways, and parking teams will carry out a deep clean of the road and kerblines to clear stubborn waste.

10.30 am

The Friends will meet at the Ecology Centre car park, litter pickers and high visibility jackets will be available. Bring a pair of gardening gloves, and wear stout shoes or boots. The litter pick will by lead by Rose, and will concentrate on the meadows area opposite the Talbot Close estate.

What you can do:-

Keep an eye out for parking restrictions along this stretch of Commonside East : between the corner with Windmill Road and Abbots Road.

Help out with clearing litter from the front of your properties.

Join the Friends of Mitcham Common with the litter pick.

Tell your neighbours about this initiative by the Council.
