Council land that looks like it’s on the Common

I’ve been asked by the Manager of the Common, Martin Boyle, to remind our members that the land near Chestnut Grove and Northumberland Gardens isn’t part of Mitcham Common.

I’ve had a look at maps – current and from the 1950s, and looked at the Land Registry title plans.

I also went there this morning to check it for myself. There is a drainage ditch, which had originally been along the south side of Commonside East.

That part of the road was removed, and the area between the fence and the ditch remains public land, that is, land belonging to Merton Council. The drainage ditch and land south of it is on Mitcham Common.

This Ordnance Survey map of 1954 shows the drainage ditch, marked as ‘drain’.

The pocket park on Commonside East/Southampton Gardens has two bug hotels. One of them, on the left, is in front of the fence, next to the roadside, and the other, on the right, is behind the fence, seemingly on the Common, but it is before to the drainage ditch, and hence still on Merton Council land.

People’s Emergency Briefing – at Vestry Hall 26/11/26

From Tony Burton:

I am writing to invite you and others in your organisation and networks to attend the Mitcham screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing film on the risks to British life and the UK economy from ongoing damage to nature and to our climate.

Vestry Hall, 336 London Rd, Mitcham CR4 3UD

Thursday 26 November 2026

7pm – 9pm

Attendance is free and people need to register here:

https://www.tickettailor.com/events/mitchamcricketgreencommunityheritage/2467370

The film presents a clear, measured overview of how the climate and nature crisis is affecting everyday life in Britain, and what the evidence says about risks and responses.

The initiative is explicitly non-partisan and is supported by a wide range of organisations including National Trust, Church of England, Exeter University, the Royal Meteorological Society, WWF, National Education Union, and many more.

We will host a discussion among those attending following the film and would welcome your contribution to this.

We would greatly value your participation and would appreciate your support in promoting the event through your networks. A publicity card is attached.

Thanks

Tony Burton
